Where are our GPS cranes?

© movebank.org / Dr. Michael Woike

On the weekend of the 7/8th November our GPS cranes Sunny, “Wölkchen” (meaning “little clouds”) and Blacky used the good weather conditions to fly further into the South. Since mid-September two of them stayed in Lower Saxony (Diepholzer Moorniederung). Sunny (3129) continued his flight to the Lac Du Der Chantecoq in France on 7th and 8th of November. “Wölkchen” (3127) already continued his flight to the Extremadura in Spain on 4th to 6th of November. The location of Blacky (3128) is still unclear, as his GPS transmitter is currently not working. He has also started migration mid-September – from Sweden to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Darß - Zingst Bodden chain and island Rügen). From mid-October on he was seen in Lower Saxony (Diepholzer Moorniederung) as could be told from his rings. His last sighting was on 24th of October 2020. It is very likely that he is also already in France or Spain. We are waiting excitedly for the next readout from the European colleagues.
