Happy Cranes

Do you think your daily life is stressful? Then you haven’t seen what our cranes go through every day!

At the moment, most of the local cranes are busy nesting. It’s a very responsible yet risky task, as the photos from wildlife cameras at the nesting site repeatedly show.

This pair of cranes from Northern Pomerania has now been rewarded with good fortune. After about two weeks of brooding, a raccoon attempted to steal the two eggs during the night. Both adult birds noticed in time and scared the intruder away.

After a quiet night, the water-shy fox approached the cranes’ nest the following night via a fallen tree. Once again, both adult birds were wide awake and brave enough to stand up to the dangerous predator. Their efforts paid off – the fox retreated into the night without taking any of the cranes’ eggs.

A few days later – last weekend – it rained so heavily that the crane pair’s nest was partially flooded. Desperately, they searched for nesting material to protect the eggs from cooling down and falling into the water. Fortunately, they found enough supplies and the rain soon stopped.

A cause for celebration: the cranes trumpeted loudly – well aware that they had saved their offspring once again.
