Cranes escape from snow
Our colleagues from the BUND have counted 10,900 cranes in the “Diepholzer Moorniederung” (Lower Saxony) on the weekend of 17th and 18th of January. The winter onset (about 35 cm snow depth) from 6th of February on and the accompanying snow storm and east wind led to a crane escape, probably to France. We assume that most cranes left the resting area in Diepholz. Please report your crane observations on ornitho.de, so that we can better document and understand these migration events. Thank you!
