Cranes and agriculture

© Anne Kettner

At the first look cranes make profit from the modern agriculture, especially from the large scale maize farming. If maize stubble fields are long enough available, this might be true for resting cranes.

But for cranes, that breeds in the agricultural landscape or use fields as feeding habitats for their chicks, modern agriculture causes a lot of problems. Rape fields can’t be used for feeding by crane families. Caused by the decrease of insects and other animal and plant species on agricultural land, cranes find there quite often not enough food for their offspring. They therefore need quite large territories that the chicks do not starve (see picture).

We therefore want to support the call of the NABU for better land use politics in Europe. Please have a look and vote until 2nd of May at  www.NABU.de/abstimmen
