Autumn resting of the cranes - now already 48,000 birds of luck
the impressive natural spectacle of the autumn resting of the cranes in the region of the National Park "Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft" is approaching its peak early. Last weekend, 48,000 birds of luck were already counted. That is more than 10,000 birds more than at the same time last year. One of the largest resting areas of the charismatic cranes in Europe is located on the Baltic Sea coast of Western Pomerania. Around 15 October, up to 70,000 cranes are expected at the same time, gorging themselves here on their energy reserves for the onward flight. Crane Conservation Germany has been working to protect the breeding and resting areas of these largest native birds since 1991 and runs the NABU Crane Centre in Groß Mohrdorf. Open daily from 9.30-17.30, the permanent exhibition near Stralsund not only offers extensive multimedia information on the life of the charismatic cranes, but is also the starting point for numerous excursions and other events. The "birds of luck" can be observed in the morning or evening on their way to the roost and during the day on the feeding areas, where they also perform their famous dances - especially at KRANORAMA, an observation station not far from the NABU Crane Centre.
